Miller Park Security and Disaster Recovery Event

We just had a very successful event at Miller Park. The Milwaukee Brewers were not successful and were handed a big defeat by the Chicago Cubs.

Our event got started at 8:30 am and we kept it on track. We even got to tour Miller Park and walk on the baseball field, which was very neat. We finished the night watching the brewers from the Gehl Club. It had nice seating and some very good food.
It also allowed us to highlight some of the solutions and the various vendor partners we work with. All of over vendors gave great presentations and they can be found at http://www.jsotechnology.com/.

I don’t think I will do an event that starts at 8:30 am again. It made for a very long day and I think most were tired by the end of the day. I believe I would start at noon.

The discussion was around Security and Disaster Recovery and I think it is a topic that numerous companies take for granite. We asked how many had a written Disaster Recovery plan, only a few hands went up. As techies we always think about the technology needed to keep our systems up and running. But Disaster Recovery is more than just technology. You need to involve management and business Leaders. They will define what are the key systems and what your recovery time objective is. It can also define which people need to report after a disaster and how they are going to report. Also, when a true disaster does hit, it is better to follow a plan than to run around wondering what to do next. It will help the business recovery faster and also give shaken employee’s a guide to follow.

With Security, it still amazes me how many people have a firewall that is wide open. It is the same as having a lock and a deadbolt on a door, but never locking them. A good firewall these days should at least have the services and ports filtered, have incoming traffic being scanned for viruses. Also, most firewall’s these days have some sort of webfiltering capabilities. These capabilities should be enable to ensure that you have a secure network.

Overall, the event was wonderful. We provided some very good information and also
